Have Your Say: Home to School Travel Policy

North Yorkshire Council is asking for your views on proposed changes to its Home to School Travel Policy, following a review of the changes introduced in 2024.

The review found that the policy is generally working as intended but identified areas where improvements could help families and young people.

What changes are proposed?

  • Reviewing a small number of school travel routes.
  • Improving maps and route data.
  • Strengthening the appeals process.
  • Clarifying how routes and distances are assessed.
  • Improving information and guidance.

Have Your Say

Following approval by the council’s executive on 18 September, a six-week consultation gives parents, carers, young people, schools and other interested people the opportunity to share their views.

Your feedback will help inform decisions before the recommendations are considered at a full council meeting in November.

The consultation is live until 4th November 2026.

The review does not recommend a return to catchment-based transport eligibility. Eligibility would continue to be based on a child’s nearest suitable school with available places.
